Don H. Smith MD Don H. Smith MD of Fort Wayne IN who was in process of moving to Port Washington WI passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday October 12 2011 in Port Washington. He was 66 years old. Don is survived by his wife Jamie of Fort Wayne IN who dearly misses her soul mate. They were married in Mansfield Ohio in 1998. He is further survived by his two children Devin Owain Neal (Kristen) Howard-Smith of Columbus OH and Dr. Deirdre (Josh) Amaro of San Diego CA two step-daughters Julia (Justin) Behm of Port Washington WI and Andrea (Tom) Gingery of Athens OH his three grandchildren Curran and Anneke Howard- Smith and Estelle Behm two brothers Kenneth W. (Pat) Smith of Fairfax VA and Kerry C. Smith of Bishop CA and other relatives and many many friends colleagues and patients. He was previously married to Donna Erickson Ph.D. Don was born in Dallas TX on December 19 1944 son of Kenneth Smith and Katherine White Smith. He grew up Live Oak FL and Fairfax VA. Don served his country during the Vietnam Era as a Major in the US Army Special Forces and was honorably discharged after 6 years. He was stationed in Thailand and helped develop a medical facility in the town of Lop Buri. During his years of education he attended Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware OH Waseda University in Tokyo Japan and his medical degree was from the Yale University School of Medicine where his Doctoral Thesis was on West Nile Virus. He was also a Junior Research Fellow at Yale Arborvirus Research Unit (YARU) where Don was based in Ibadan Nigeria. Don was a Board Certified Psychiatrist practicing both inpatient and outpatient and prison psychiatry. He most recently worked with the Michigan Prison System and also at the Northeastern Center in Indiana. Since he had arrived in Fort Wayne he additionally had worked at Parkview Behavioral Health and at the Fort Wayne Developmental Center. In the 1990's Don practiced in Mansfield Ohio at the Richland Psychiatric Hospital. Don had just started a new position as Psychiatrist at Aurora Sheboygan Clinic in Wisconsin. Don was a member and captain of the Ohio Wesleyan University Wrestling Team from 1964-1966. Another one of Don's passions in life was Judo. He was the first to obtain a black belt in Judo in just three months from the Kodokan in Japan and was also a certified Jujitsu instructor. In 2009 Don felt quite honored to have won the Silver Medal at the World Masters Judo Tournament in Atlanta GA. Don also belonged to MENSA Intertel Phi Beta Kappa Society the US Judo Federation AmVets American Legion and VFW. Don was an avid reader and enjoyed a profound literary collection. It was rare to find him without a book in hand. Observances will be held at the D.O. McCombs and Sons funeral home at 1320 East Dupont Rd. in Ft. Wayne IN. Visitation will be held on Fri Oct 28th from 5:30 until 7:30 PM and on Sat Oct 29th there will be visitation beginning at 1:00 PM with services at 2PM.
