David Rob Rice passed away on Tuesday, August 23 at his home in Port Washington after suffering a heart attack.
Dave is survived by his loving partner of over twenty years, Carol Strackbein; dear sisters Karen Lavelle and Lesley Wills; nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews; Carol's family and niece Ashley; close friend, Linda Reid; and many other loved ones.
A transplant from England who worked on projects on both sides of the pond, Dave met Carol while working on a water reuse project for Sanitaire in Milwaukee. He liked the area, settled in Port Washington, and became a United States Citizen in 2018.
David loved sailing. Later in life, he transitioned from being a sailboat skipper and trimmer to a Seabourn cruise passenger, traveling the world with Carol and friends.
He was an engineer, inventor, and tinkerer who loved all things mechanical and electronic. Dave was always ready to lend a helping hand, sharing his considerable expertise, explaining how things worked, and educating young people as they made their way in the world.
Some of his proudest accomplishments were participating in the Water Council's BREW program and being selected as a Top 10 Finalist in the 2018 NASA iTech competition with a design for improving the performance of the water recycling system on the International Space Station.
Not an early riser, David always preferred a moon rise to a sun rise. He also enjoyed well-written science fiction, taking photos, and finding new recipes to cook for Carol and his friends.
A celebration of his life will be held at Engine Room 102 in Port Washington on Saturday, September 10 from 2pm to 4pm. We will have a short program at 2pm, followed by time for sharing your stories about David with friends and family.
Carol has created a scholarship fund in memory of Dave. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to that fund on
