DAVID LEO HERBERT nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Mr. Dave Herbert of LarAnn Street in Belgium formerly of Walters Street in Port Washington passed away Saturday evening December 5 2009 at Columbia-St. Maryrsquo;s Ozaukee Campus in Mequon.nbsp; He was 83 years old.nbsp; David was born in Fond du Lac on July 13 1926 the second son of Alfred and Rosella Schmitz Herbert. nbsp;He spent his school years in Fond du Lac where he graduated from Goodrich High School in 1944. nbsp;Dave joined the United States Navy and served during World War II.nbsp; Most of the next two years were spent aboard a small aircraft carrier in the Pacific Theatre. nbsp; nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; On August 20 1949 he was united in marriage with Marlys J. Brandt in Fond du Lac.nbsp; Mr. Herbert continued his education the following month at the University Extension in Fond du Lac before transferring to UW Oshkosh where he received his BS degree in Elementary Education in January 1953.nbsp; In the fall of that year the couple moved to Port Washington where for the next four years Mr. Herbert taught the 6th Grade and then 7th-8th grade Math until 1957 when he received a MS degree at UW and became an elementary school principal in the Port Washington School district.nbsp; He served in that capacity in various district schools until 1968 when he became the first principal of Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Port Washington.nbsp; In the spring of 1973 he was appointed Superintendent of Schools for the district where he served until his retirement in 1982.nbsp; nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; Dave was a member of First Congregational Church in Port Washington as well as a member of American Legion Post 412 in Belgium Post 82 in Port Washington the Ozaukee County Senior Golf Group and was a former Rotarian. nbsp;He was also a member of the Desert Garden Congregational Church in Sun City West AZ and the Elks Club in Sun City AZ .nbsp;nbsp; nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; David is survived by his wife Marlys of Belgium their four children: Brant (Kathryn) Herbert of Anthem AZ William (Linda) Herbert of Madison Mark Herbert of Sheboygan and Julie (Douglas) Decent of West Bend.nbsp; He is further survived by nine grandchildren: Jason Brandon Justin Nicholas Jordan Anthony Zachary Blake and Brooke 1 brother Steven (Melaine) Herbert of Chicago sister-in-law Katheryn (the late John) Herbert of Georgia nieces nephews other relatives and friends.nbsp; He is preceded in death by his parents sister Marilyn Bertz and brother John.nbsp; nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;A Memorial Service for David will be held at 12 noon on Saturday December 19 atnbsp;First Congregational Church 131 N.
