Constance “Connie” I. Backman, age 88, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026, in Sheboygan surrounded by loved ones. She was born on July 29, 1937, in Milwaukee to John and Elizabeth “Betty” Bischof.
Connie married her sweetheart Donald “Don” Backman on January 5, 1957, in Milwaukee. Don and Connie raised their children in Saukville and later moved to Cedar Grove. They were married for just shy of 50 years before Don passed away in 2006. In 2024 Connie moved to Sheboygan Senior Community, where she received excellent care.
Connie worked at Power Products and Tecumseh Products Company, and later finished her working years as a bakery manager at Piggly Wiggly in Saukville. She was known for her warm smile and cheerful spirit everywhere she went.
Connie was the loving mother of Bryon Backman, Susan (John) Conley, Julie (Jeffrey) Large, and Charlyn “Char” (Brian) Grover. She was a proud grandmother to David (Deseray) Backman, Cory Backman, Jessica (Kevin) Sprague, Joshua (Mary Jean) Boyle, Jordon Boyle, Joseph (Julie Ann Fregoso) Boyle, Michael (Melissa) Large, Rick (Crystal) Large, Kayla (Michael) Schommer, CJ Grover, and Jacob (Emmalynn) Grover.
She is further survived by 22 great-grandchildren: Spencer Jones, Brayden Backman, Kamdon Backman, Landon Backman, Grace Sprague, Faith (Joseph) Ramsey, Collin Sprague, Aubrielle Boyle, Ezekiel Sandoval, Heaven Boyle, Harmony Boyle, Samuel Boyle, Aurora Boyle, Susanna Boyle, Aria Large, Paxton Large, Alex Large, Levi Schommer, Esau Schommer, Eden Schommer, Willow Grover, and Phineas Grover, her twin sister Carol Wagberg, nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband Don, parents John and Betty Bischof, and brother Arthur Bischof.
Connie loved music and especially enjoyed listening to Elvis Presley and Christian music. At Sheboygan Senior Community, she was often found tapping her toes, singing along, and bringing joy to those around her. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing cards, traveling, swimming, crocheting, and shopping. She was a faithful member of Open Door Bible Church and cherished Bible studies and fellowship with her dear friends Jim and Nora Engelman and many friends from Open Door. Most of all, she lit up when family was around and loved to be part of their lives as much as she could.
Anyone who knew Connie knew she loved her “bling” and could never have enough jewelry to match her sparkle. She was known for her bubbly personality, bright dimpled smile, and kind heart. Her children’s friends lovingly called her “Ma” and “Mrs. Claus.” Staff members at her home would often say, “If we’re having a bad day, we go see Connie.” She had a wonderful ability to make people laugh and she had no problem laughing at herself.
Connie leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love, joy, and laughter. She will be deeply missed by so many and forever remain in the hearts of those who loved her.
Funeral Services will be held at 3:30PM on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Open Door Bible Church 3420 Hwy LL, Port Washington. The family will receive guests at the church on Saturday from 1:30PM until services begin at 3:30PM. The family invites anyone to wear purple or "bling" in Connie's honor.
If desired, memorial donations may be made to Sheboygan Senior Community or Open Door Bible Church in Connie's name.
