Obituary

Cindy Benkowski of Sheboygan, formerly of Cedarburg, passed away peacefully September 26, 2019, at Froedert Hospital's Center for Advanced Care on Horizon's Hospice program after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 62 years old. Cindy was born to Donald and Nancy Schumacher, November 27, 1956 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She grew up in Muskego, WI, graduated from Muskego High School, and received her bachelor degree in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. Cindy grew up on Big Muskego Lake and had a passion for the outdoors that remained an important part of her life wherever she was, whether it was fishing and boating as a young girl at the lake house up north, hiking among the saguaros during her time in Arizona, or relaxing in her garden listening to the waves of Lake Michigan at her home in Sheboygan. Cindy was a loving and devoted mother. She and her former husband, Kevin Benkowski, raised their family in Cedarburg while owning and running Just Kidding, a successful children's apparel shop and hair salon in Whitefish Bay, for 20 years before relocating to Fountain Hills, AZ in 2004. Cindy lived in Arizona for 12 years before returning to Wisconsin to be closer to her family. Cindy was a people person as exemplified by her passion for retail. With her bright smile and contagious personality, she always made friends wherever she went. She loved spending time with her friends and extended family, both in Wisconsin and Arizona, whether it was going to concerts, eyeing up the latest fashion trends in Chicago and New York City, attending ASU football games, fish fry "Fri-yays", hiking in the woods and in the desert, or watching the Packers. She loved listening to her sons play music and she absolutely loved being a Grandma to three loving grandchildren. She had a knack for putting other people before herself. This altruistic grace and humility shined brightly up until her final moments as she made sure everyone around her was taken care of. Cindy is survived by her two sons Andrzej (Andrea) Benkowski and Stefan (Loryn) Benkowski, grandchildren Henry, Anton, and Llewyn Benkowski, mother Nancy Cronin, brother Kurt Schumacher, and her former husband, Kevin Benkowski. She is preceded in death by her mother's husband Steve Cronin. The family would like to graciously thank all of the doctors and nurses at Froedert Medical Center in Milwaukee and St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan, the hospice nurses of Horizon Home Care, and her beloved Aunt, Kate Koch, for her selfless caregiving she provided near the end of Cindy's life. You will forever remain in our hearts. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, October 20th, at 11am, at the Eernisse Funeral Home, 1167 Washington Avenue, Cedarburg, WI. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Stand Up to Cancer Organization (https://standuptocancer.org/).
