Obituary

Chuck Schmit of Port Washington passed away surrounded by his loving family at Sharon S. Richardson Hospice Center in Sheboygan Falls on Thursday morning, May 7, 2026. He was 90 years old.

Charles was born on January 10, 1936, in Sheboygan to Louis and Rose (nee Depies) Schmit. He grew up in Port Washington and attended St. Mary’s School before attending and graduating from Port Washington High School, Class of 1954. Chuck proudly served in the US Army from 1955 until 1958.

On February 7, 1959, he was united in marriage with Marilyn Reif at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Port Washington. The couple remained in Port to raise their family of four children. Marilyn preceded him in death in 2016.

Chuck was a hard worker and very dependable; he worked with his father at Schmit Household & Electric for many years, then took a position with Continental Can Company before taking a job with the water department in Port Washington. He retired in1998.

Chuck was a faithful member of St. John XXIII Parish. In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling, fishing and camping. There were many family trips to Eagle River, and more currently, time spent at his son’s cabin near Crivitz. Chuck enjoyed travel and often visited his children out of state, frequently heading out to help with whatever they needed… including helping watch the grandchildren. He was always there for his family!

Mr. Schmit loved the simple joy of life, and took pride in keeping his lawn, his car, and his house in top notch condition.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children Debbie (Dave) Murphy of North Fort Myers, FL, Linda (Chuck) Mobraten of Denver, CO, Jeff (Jane) Schmit of Tampa, FL, and Mike (Kim) Schmit of Belgium. He is further survived by 8 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, sister Suzanne (the late Robert) Richard, nieces, nephews, other family and friends. Chuck is preceded in death by his wife Marilyn, his parents Louis and Rose Schmit, and brother Richard (the late Sue) Schmit.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 4PM on Thursday, May 14th, at St. John XXIII-St. Peter of Alcantara Church, 1800 N. Wisconsin St., Port Washington. Father Patrick Wendt will preside the Mass. The family will greet visitors at the church on Thursday from 2-4PM. Chuck will be laid to rest beside his wife in St. Mary’s Mausoleum the following morning, with military honors.

If desired, memorials are suggested to St. John XXIII in Chuck’s name.
