Charles A. Schaefer age 91 of Port Washington passed away Saturday evening May 8 2010 at Belgium Gardens in Belgium surrounded by his loving family.nbsp; Charlie was born on July 31 1918 in Port Washington son of Charles and Ida Scharl Schaefer.nbsp; Charlie attended Port Washington High School where he was a stand-out athlete.nbsp; He was the Captain and last surviving member of Portrsquo;s 1936 state basketball championship team the only one in Portrsquo;s history.nbsp; After graduating in 1936 from Port High Charlie attended Marquette University in Milwaukee graduating in 1942 with a Bachelorrsquo;s Degree in Civil Engineering.nbsp; Mr. Schaefer decided to serve his country after college and joined the US Navy.nbsp; He served as an officer with the Seabees in the Pacific.nbsp; After being discharged from active duty Charlie served in the Naval Reserves for 20 years retiring as a LT. Commander.nbsp; On April 25 1942 he married AnnaRuth Gahan at St. Maryrsquo;s Church in Port Washington.nbsp; After doing Civil Engineering work in Milwaukee Charlie joined Gahan and Sons Construction working on many projects throughout Port Washington including St. Peter of Alcantara Church and the local swimming pool.nbsp; After Gahan and Sons Charlie worked for Klug and Smith in Milwaukee.nbsp; His wife AnnaRuth preceded him into death in 1991.nbsp; In 1994 Charlie married Marjorie ldquo;Janerdquo; Travers Smith at St. Maryrsquo;s Catholic Church in Port Washington.nbsp; She preceded him in death in 2009.nbsp; Mr. Schaefer is a member of St. Maryrsquo;s Catholic Church the Port Washington ndash; Saukville Rotary Club where he served as President in 1966 the former Clerk for the Town of Port Washington for 13 years a former member of the Board of Directors of the Port Washington Savings and Loan the Van Ells-Schanen American Legion Post 82.nbsp; He is survived by his children: Kathy (Jack) Peiffer of Belgium Peggy (Geoff) Greiveldinger of Racinenbsp; Kelly (Terri) Schaefer of St. Croix Falls Megan Schaefer of Port Washington and Carolyn (the late Charles Jr.) Schaefer of Wauwatosa. as well as 7 step-children: Steven Smith of Des Plaines IL Nancy Robertson of Fresno CA Mark (Donna Walsh) Smith of Brooklyn WI Laurie Fehlhaber of Grafton Craig (Cheri) Smith of Plover Reed (Judy) Smith of Binghamton NY and Scot (Lise) Smith of Missoula MT.nbsp; He is further survived by 11 grandchildren 19 great-grandchildren his brother Herbert Schaefer of Port Washington sisters-in-law Eleanore nbsp;and Edna Schaefer both of Port Washington 6 step-grandchildren 8 step-great-grandchildren nieces nephews other relatives and many friends.nbsp; He is preceded in death by his two wives AnnaRuth and Jane son Charles Jr. and two brothers Walter ldquo;Iggyrdquo; Schaefer and Raymond Schaefer.nbsp; A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30AM on Saturday May 15 2010 at St. Maryrsquo;s Catholic Church 430 N. Johnson St. in Port Washington. Father Thomas Lijewski will officiate. He will be laid to rest in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight. The family will receive visitors at the Eernisse Funeral Home 1600 W. Grand Ave. in Port Washington on Friday evening from 4-7PM and again on Saturday morning at the church from 11-11:30AM.
