Cecilia passed peacefully away on October 20, 2020 in the home of her daughter Peggy Folz and husband Larry at the age of 91. She had been cared for by Sharon S. Richardson Hospice and her family.
Cecilia was born Cecilia Maybelle Niederkorn to Frank and Cecilia Niederkorn on April 23, 1929, in the city of Port Washington, Wisconsin. She lived and attended school in Port Washington, and on June 25, 1955, married Robert Schanen. They made their home in Port Washington until the early 1980's when they relocated to Random Lake.
In 1992, after sadly losing her husband to cancer at the age of 62, Cecilia continued to live in Random Lake until 2007. Her daughter Peggy Folz and husband Larry then graciously opened their Belgium home to Cecilia to better care for her.
Cecilia is survived by her youngest sister Annette Niederkorn of La Crosse, and her three children: Diane Race, Peggy (Larry) Folz and Daniel (Sheila) Schanen. She is further survived by grandchildren Zack, Jody and John, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Cecilia was preceded in death by her parents Frank & Cecilia Niederkorn, sisters Marvel Foley and Myra Arndt, and her beloved husband Robert Schanen.
In days of health Cecilia enjoyed homemaking, gardening, vacation trips with her husband, reading good books, Bible study and church fellowship. She enjoyed letter correspondence and wrote to active duty soldiers through a program called "Adopt A Platoon" as well as letters of encouragement to those in prison through a Christian prison ministry program.
Later in years she looked forward to weekly beauty shop and lunch dates with her devoted friend and caregiver, Rose. In her later years Cecilia endured multiple medical problems, hospitalizations, and rehab visits with grace, but kept a big smile for everyone until the end.
Cecilia was a faithful wife and mother, and loved her husband, children, and her Lord. She is now truly "safe at home" in the arms of her Savior.
Special thanks to Sharon S. Richardson Hospice for their excellent end of life care.
Memorials are suggested to the Belgium Fire Department, as the family is very grateful for all of their help.
