IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carl James
Mattson

Carl James Mattson passed away peacefully at Ivy Manor in West Bend, Wisconsin, on
Wednesday, June 12, 2024. He was born April 16, 1940, in Milwaukee to the late Hubert and
Bernice Mattson. Carl is survived and will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 59 years, Dianne,
his daughters Patricia Williams (Tony) and Sarah Schettler (Joel), and his brother Edward Mattson (Sun).
He was preceded in death by his brother Bert Mattson, Bert's wife Carol, and their daughter Tina.
He is survived by many beloved relatives, friends, nieces, and nephews.
Carl proudly served in the United States Air Force. He studied at Marquette University and
Milwaukee School of Engineering, and spent the majority of his career at Badger Meter in
various engineering capacities. Carl had a strong interest in computers and technology. He also
dedicated his time to helping his wife operate her salon business, Carson's of Cedarburg, for 38
years. Throughout his life, Carl was passionate about tinkering and fixing things. He engaged in
various projects, such as helping friends with home electrical installations and developing an
underground irrigation system for Dianne's gardens. He served as an active member of the
Knights of Columbus in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, for 35 years and later in West Bend.
Carl enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his daughters, at his family's home on
Lake Nebagamon in northern Wisconsin. He and Diane enjoyed traveling throughout the United
States, Canada, and Mexico. An avid pilot, Carl owned his own plane and would often embark
on day trips with Dianne in his Cessna aircraft. As a young boy Carl contracted polio, and while it
affected him throughout his life he never let it interfere with anything he wanted to accomplish.
Funeral visitation will be held at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 138 N. 8th Ave in West Bend, Wisconsin
on Tuesday, June 25, from 9:30 - 10:45 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Military Honors
will be presented at the conclusion of Mass. A lunch will be served in the church hall following the Military Honors.
A private committal will be held at a later date at St. Francis Borgia Cemetery, Cedarburg, Wisconsin.
The family suggests that those wishing to honor Carl's memory consider making a donation to
the American Cancer Society or to the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, which supports
the advancement of post-polio syndrome research and awareness.
The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful caregivers at Ivy Manor and Preceptor
Hospice for their compassionate care of Carl during his final days.
