Bruno V. Nordberg
Born to eternal life on Tues., August 22, 2017, age 95. Beloved husband of Joan (nee Steckel) for 71 years. Loving father of William (Christine) Nordberg, Richard (Kathleen) Nordberg, Mary Jo (Randall) Conklin, Jean Cobb, and John Nordberg. Proud grandfather of Katherine (Brandon) Luisier, Linnea, Peter, Anna, and William Nordberg; Brian, Kevin (Jennifer), and Jeffrey Nordberg. Special great-grandfather of Parker and Cobie Nordberg; Oliver and Arwin Luisier. Uncle to Craig (Judy) Mosier, Sandra (Elroy) Streich, Marilyn Bourke, Anne (Allen) McKie, Robert (Diane) O'Connor and Carol (Frederick) Riesmeyer. Preceded in death by his father Bruno V. E. Nordberg and mother Desiree (nee Conradi), sister Barbara Mosier and nephew Dennis O'Connor.
Bruno was born in Milwaukee on February 2, 1922, and lived there his entire life. He attended Hawley Street Grade School and Solomon Juneau High School, where he met his future wife Joan. He attended St. John Military Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin for his senior year of high school, and graduated in 1940.
Bruno began his studies in mechanical engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in the fall of 1940. After the start of World War II, Bruno enlisted in the US Naval Reserves on August 25, 1942, and enrolled into the V 12 Navy College Training Program at Marquette University. He continued his studies in mechanical engineering while training to become an officer in the US Naval Reserves.
Bruno gradated with a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Marquette University in 1944, and began training at the US Naval Pre-Midshipman School at Asbury Park, NJ. He continued his training at the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. Due to illness and the end of the war, Bruno was honorably discharged on May 26, 1946.
On August 17, 1946, Bruno and Joan were married at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Milwaukee. Bruno's father had been ill and passed away two days later.
In October 1946, at the age of 24, Bruno joined the Nordberg Manufacturing Co. in Milwaukee as a mechanical engineer. He sold Nordberg equipment throughout the United States and Canada, and represented the company in marketing large diesel engines for marine propulsion and power generation and industrial processing equipment including stone and mineral crushers and hydraulic presses. He worked there until 1970, when the company was acquired by Rex Chainbelt and later became Rexnord.
In his late 20's, Bruno authored the "Diesel Engine" article for the Encyclopedia Britannica, ca. 1952 edition.
Bruno pursued a myriad of business and personal interests. He was a life-long learner and always looked for new challenges. He acquired a real estate broker's license and became involved in several real estate development projects that appealed to him. He took up sailing again on Lake Michigan as he had done with his parents decades earlier. Bruno learned to fly and acquired his private pilot's license when he was in his late 50's. Bruno and Joan enjoyed travelling together within the United States, as well as to Europe, South America, and the Caribbean.
Throughout his life, Bruno belonged to a long list and wide variety of organizations some of which include the St. Jude Catholic Church choir, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Society of Naval Engineers, Forest Products Research Society, Afghan Hound Club of Wisconsin, Pi Tau Sigma mechanical engineering honor society, Holy Name Society, Mississippi Valley Association, and Ohio Valley Improvement Association.
Visitation is Friday, September 1, 2017, beginning at noon, at the Alexian Village-Chapel of the Holy Spirit, 9301 N. 76th St., Milwaukee, WI 53223, immediately followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 p.m. A reception at Alexian will follow. Private internment will be at Forest Home Cemetery.
