Obituary

Betty Anne Schowalter, of Port Washington, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at Lawlis Hospice in Mequon, surrounded by her loving family. She was 92 years old.

Betty was born January 8, 1931, at her family home on Chestnut St. in West Bend to Alexander and Helen (Dreblow) Tuchscherer. She grew up in West Bend and graduated from West Bend High School with the Class of 1949. On February 19, 1952, Betty married Allan Schowalter of Port Washington at Camp Kilmer in New Jersey. Al was in the Army and was soon shipped out to Berlin, Germany. Having never flown before, Betty flew across the Atlantic to be with Al and they had their first child in Berlin. They spent 61 years together and raised four children.

She was a member of St. John XXIII Parish (St Mary's Church), and the VFW auxiliary Post 5373 and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 82. She was an active Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader when her children were young, volunteered as a Pink Lady at St. Alphonsus Hospital in Port Washington and loved selling poppies for the VFW.

Betty had a big smile for everyone she met and was a fun, loving, and caring person, always concerned about others before herself. She enjoyed swimming, reading, crossword puzzles, and especially spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her four children: Michael Schowalter, of Saukville, Susan Schmidt of Port Washington, Cathy (Jim) Thompson of Cedarburg, and Gary (Bonnie Tenhaken) Schowalter of Fredonia. She is further survived by eight grandchildren: Tracy Schmidt, Jonathan (Tanisha) Schowalter, Andrew Wallenkamp, Angela and Joshua Schowalter, Jacquelyn (Jacob) Feutz, Chad Schowalter and Patrick Thompson, eight great-grandchildren: Jiana, Austin, Walter, Evelyn, Avery, Ava, Mia, and Arlo, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Allan and her two brothers, Walter, and Richard Tuchscherer.

A Liturgy of the Word service will be celebrated on Friday, July 14, 2023, at 6:00 PM, at St. John XXIII Catholic Church - St. Peter of Alcantara Church, 1800 North Wisconsin Street, Port Washington. Father Don Thimm will preside over the service.

The family will receive guests at the church on July 14th from 4:00 PM until the time of the service.

She will be laid to rest at St. Mary's Cemetery in Port Washington beside her husband.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to VFW Post 5373 or a charity of your choice.
