Obituary

Mrs. Ardy Ahsmann of the Town of Port Washington passed away at Lasata Care Center in the evening hours of Wednesday, September 3, 2025. She was 87 years old.

Arydce was born in Milwaukee on July 2, 1938, the daughter of Herbert and Evelyn (nee Szolowicz) Mathisen. She attended local schools and graduated from St. Catherine's High School in Racine.

On January 30, 1960, Ardy was united in marriage with Douglas Ahsmann at St. John's Catholic Church in South Milwaukee. In 1961 the couple started their family and bought a home on Highway LL in the Town of Port where they lived out the rest of their lives.

Ardy and Doug loved their hobby farm, which included many nut and fruit trees. They also had a very large vegetable garden, which meant Ardy became an expert on canning and preserving the fruits of their labors. The family frequently sponsored AFS students and loved teaching children from around the world about rural American life. When their youngest daughter, Melissa, was born with health issues, they devoted much of their time to caring for her. Doug preceded Ardy in death in 2015.

Ardy called herself a "professional volunteer" and was very active in many local groups. She was a founding member of the Port Washington Historical Society and was instrumental in getting the Light Station up and running. She was also a longtime member and past president of the Port Washington Women's Club, a member of the American Legion Post 82 Auxiliary, and the Milwaukee Metropolitan Military Club Auxiliary. Mrs. Ahsmann was a Girl Scout leader for over 25 years and remained a lifetime Scout until her passing. She never missed an opportunity to pass on knowledge to the girls in her care, and every campfire included songs that would be carried on to future generations. If volunteering was her mission, Scouting was Ardy's passion.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters Maren (Thomas) Finnegan of Palatine, IL, Merrie (Todd) Schamberger of Neenah, and Marcia (Jim) Trotchie – Ahsmann of Port Washington. She is further survived by grandchildren Kyle, Maggie, Adam, and Molly, great-grandson Auggie, sister Lois (Wayne) Champagne, sister-in-law Carol (the late Jack) Ahsmann, other extended family members and many, many friends. Ardy is preceded in death by her husband Doug, sister Audrey Rammell, and her daughter Melissa, who sadly passed away just days before her mother.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 5:30pm on Friday, September 26, 2025, at St. John XXIII – St. Peter Catholic Church, 1800 N Wisconsin St., Port Washington. Father Patrick Wendt will preside the Mass. The family will receive guests at the church on Friday, September 26th, from 4pm until Mass begins at 5:30pm. Ardy will be laid to rest beside her family the next day at St. Mary's Cemetery in Port Washington.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Ardy's name to the Port Washington Women's Club, The Food Panty, Rawhide Youth Services, Milwaukee Rescue Mission, or Ozaukee Washington Land Trust.
