Obituary

Anne (Haertel) Weyker passed away peacefully on November 14, surrounded by her family, after a long and courageous battle with chronic kidney disease. She faced her final days with the same strength, humor, and grace that defined her remarkable life. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Carl and Pearl (Haidle) Haertel, Anne was the youngest of siblings Marilyn, Jim, John, and Jane. The family spent Anne's early years in Wauwatosa before settling in Oconomowoc, where she graduated from Oconomowoc High School in 1956. Later, her family grew to include stepmother, Matilda (Till Ertl) Haertel, and stepsiblings Jim, Dolores (Dolly), and Lucille. Anne attended Marquette University, graduating in 1960 with a degree in Journalism. That same year, she married Sylvester ("Syl") Weyker, and together they embarked on their life's adventure. Their first home was in Cherry Point, North Carolina, where Syl was stationed with the U.S. Marine Corps and where they welcomed their first child, Julie. In 1962, they returned to a farmhouse in Belgium, Wisconsin, which became both the heart and the hub of their growing family. Anne's career path reflected her passion for communication and community. She worked as a local writer for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and Ozaukee Press, for Donahue & Associates in Sheboygan, and ultimately in her most beloved role as an assistant in the UW-Extension Office for Ozaukee County, where she supported the 4-H program. Generations of Ozaukee County youth remember Anne for her humor, warmth, and no-nonsense organization — especially during the Ozaukee County Fair, where she seemed to know every child, ribbon, and rule by heart. At home, Anne's farmhouse was a reflection of her spirit: a lovingly curated collection of antiques gathered on adventures with her dear college friend, Karen Haack. She was a lover of animals, especially horses, and spent many joyful years involved in farm life and horse ventures with her friend Cathie Urness. She and Syl led the Jay Road 4-H Club for decades, instilling in their children and countless others the values of responsibility, curiosity, and kindness. After their children were grown, Anne and Syl discovered a shared love for Norwegian Fjord horses, raising several generations on Clay Ridge Farm and becoming active members of the Midwest Fjord Horse Club. Anne had a way with words that could open doors, win hearts, and occasionally stir up just the right kind of trouble. She delighted in crafting letters—whether to friends, family, or public figures—and proudly claimed credit for convincing Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy to wear suits during his television show. A devoted fan of Marquette basketball and the Packers, she cheered with the same passion she brought to every other part of her life. Anne's lifelong bond with her sister Jane ("Beady Eyes") was one of deep affection and daily connection. The two shared decades of laughter, advice, and news—first through daily phone calls and later by email. Their children grew up more like siblings than cousins, thanks to Anne and Jane's shared sense of humor and family adventure. In her later years, Anne found peace and joy in simple moments — settled into her favorite chair with a good book (she was an avid and insatiable reader) and the family's loyal dog Nelson by her side. Anne is preceded in death by her parents Carl and Pearl Haertel, stepmother Till Haertel, siblings John (Janyce) Haertel, Jim (Georgie) Haertel, Marilyn (Al) Arndt, stepbrother Jim Ertl, stepsisters Lucille (Earl) Piber and Dolores ("Dolly") Mulvanny (Jack), nephew Carl Haertel, her husband Sylvester Weyker, in-laws Eleanor (Schmitz) Weyker and Sylvester F. Weyker, brother-in-law Howard Weyker, and son Andrew Weyker. She is survived by her sister Jane (Dale) Tremaine, sisters-in-law Carol Ertl and Joyce Weyker, brother-in-law Fr. James Weyker, SDS, and children Julie (Bob) Cramer, Joe Weyker, Tim Weyker, and Sarah (Keith) Apfelbeck. She is further survived by daughters-in-law Kim (Andrew) Weyker and Becky Weyker, as well as two close family friends, Sandy Johns and Sue Gagnon, who shared a special place in her heart and in the lives of her sons. Grandchildren include Rachel (Andy) Feldmann, Ryan Weyker, Lyndy Weyker, Nick Weyker, and Jon (Taylor) Weyker; and great-grandchildren Penelope and Eloise Feldmann, and Sunny and Rocky Weyker. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends who were fortunate to know her wit, warmth, and unwavering spirit. Anne's life was a masterclass in resilience, humor, and the power of well-chosen words. She will be remembered not only for the many roles she played—writer, mother, grandmother, mentor, friend—but for the countless ways she made those around her feel seen, supported, and loved.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 21 at 4:00 p.m. at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, 319 Giddings Avenue, Sheboygan Falls. Visitation will take place at the Church beginning at 2:00. A private family internment will take place at a later date.
