Wilmer L. Helm of Grafton, was born to eternal life on Monday, February 5, 2018 at the age of 92. He was born to Arthur and Olga (nee Schroeder) Helm on March 26, 1925 in Cedarburg. He married the late Rita (nee Davies) Helm on May 27, 1950 and together they had four children.
Wilmer was raised in Saukville where he and his family were members of St. Peter's UCC. He attended Port Washington High School. His father passed away when Wilmer was fourteen at which time he became a farmhand to help his family. When he was eighteen, he and his twin brother Willard were drafted by the United States Army and served during WWII in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. After the military, he and his wife raised their family in Saukville and later moved to Grafton. They enjoyed spending time with their family and especially the grandchildren. Their interests included RV camping, fishing, ceramics, and gardening. Wilmer worked for the Ozaukee County Highway Department and retired as Superintendent of Grafton Public Works on December 31, 1987. After retiring they moved to Wausaukee where his family enjoyed spending time on the lake. When Rita passed away, Wilmer moved back to Grafton and lived with his daughter Debbie. He belonged to the Saukville American Legion Post 470 for more than 70 years and is the last charter member. Wilmer and his son Scott very much enjoyed participating in the Old Glory Honor Flight to Washington D.C. He was a hard worker with a wonderful sense of humor that his family will always treasure.
Wilmer is survived by his children, Debra Helm, Diane (Ron) Jahn and Scott Helm; grandchildren, Matthew, Kevin and James Jahn, Justin (Danielle) and Brittany Helm; great-granddaughter, Quinn Willow Helm; sister-in-law Donna (Clarence) Clontz; brothers-in-law, John (Carol) Davies and Sami Davies. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Rita, his infant son Dennis; siblings, Evelyn (Wilmer) Moegenburg, Lucille (Edward) Rinn, Ruth (Leroy) Kertscher, Arthur (Jean) Helm, Willard Helm, Janet (Donald) Jacoby, Robert Helm and Donald Helm; siblings-in-law, Darlene (Edward) Gavin, Richard Davies, and Linda (Rick) Hubbard.
A Funeral Service for Wilmer will be held at 6:30PM on Friday, February 9, 2018 at the Eernisse Funeral Home of Cedarburg (1167 Washington Ave.) with Mark Gierach presiding. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Friday from 4:30PM until the time of service with a Legion walk-through at 6:15PM. Military Honors will take place immediately following the service. Wilmer will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery in Grafton.
